Delhi: Following last week's fiasco where a former Indian batsman posted a picture of him commentating, on social media, the BCCI staff member asked it to be taken down as commentators aren't allowed to post pictures from any part of the stadium on match days.

After repeated requests, the commentator with nearly a million followers, deleted the post.

This is one of many incidents where commentators have upset broadcast rights holders by sharing pictures or videos on social media during IPL games, thereby violating rules.

The BCCI has responded by taking action and informing all commentators, players, IPL owners, and the social media and content teams of each squad that breaking the rules will lead to consequences.

The two broadcast rights holders, Star India for television and Viacom 18 for digital, hold exclusive rights to 'live match' content and 'field of play' footage.

IPL teams have been given some flexibility.

Teams are prohibited from capturing or sharing footage or videos from games directly on their social media channels. However, they can post a limited number of images on match day. Teams, as well as commentators and players, are permitted to share content that the BCCI or the IPL profile releases on social media.

"The broadcasters have paid big money for IPL rights. So commentators cannot post videos or photographs on match day on social media. There have been instances where commentators have done an ‘Instagram Live’ or posted a photo from the ground. One video got one million views. Even IPL teams can’t post videos of live games. They can post a limited number of photographs and can give live match updates on their social media platforms. If found guilty, a franchise will be fined,” a BCCI official said.
