Surf detergent ads' iconic 'Lalitaji' passes away at 67

Kavita Chaudhary

Kavita Chaudhary, known for her 1989 superhit TV show, 'Udaan', and for playing Lalita-ji in the iconic Surf detergent ads, passed away at the age of 67 reportedly due to cardiac arrest on February 15.

The demise occurred at the Parvati Devi Hospital in Amritsar where she was reportedly admitted.

Udaan aired on TV in 1989 and Kavita, in that show, acted as IPS officer Kalyani Singh. Besides acting, she wrote and directed it too. The show was inspired by her sister Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya's life, who was the second IPS officer after Kiran Bedi.

At that time, Kavita was seen as a symbol of women's empowerment because there weren't many female IPS officers shown in movies and TV. As her career progressed, Kavita went on to create shows like Your Honour and IPS Diaries.

Kavita gained fame for portraying Lalitaji in the well-known Surf commercials during the 1980s and 1990s. In these ads, she depicted a smart housewife who spends money wisely and consistently makes good decisions.

Chaudhary's depiction of Lalitaji greatly boosted Surf's popularity as a brand.
