Sanjay Jaju replaces Apurva Chandra as I&B Secretary

Union Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra was appointed as the Health Secretary as part of a top-level bureaucratic reshuffle effected by the Centre on Saturday. Senior bureaucrat Sanjay Jaju has been appointed as the new Information and Broadcasting Secretary, in place of Chandra.

A 1988-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Maharashtra cadre, Chandra headed the I&B ministry for two and a half years.

After assuming charge as I&B secretary on August 2021, Chandra ordered to restart the television ratings for news genre which were suspended following the infamous TRP scam involving Arnab Goswami and former BARC CEO Partho Dasgupta.

Chandra was leading Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra, an ambitious project by the Narendra Modi government.

A Civil Engineer by education, Chandra obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and Masters in Structural Engineering from IIT Delhi.

Chandra has earlier served as Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employmentsince, Director General (Acquisition) in Ministry of Defence, Principal Secretary (Industries) in the Government of Maharashtra and Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas in the Government of India.

He has served on the Board of Directors of Maharatna PSU, GAIL (India) Ltd. and Petronet LNG Ltd.

The incoming I&B secretary Jaju, a 1992-batch IAS officer, is currently serving in his cadre state of Telangana.

Besides them, eight other senior officers have been appointed in different central government departments and in the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal.
