This part of Mumbai is rapidly expanding in terms of infrastructure and population. Hence, New Bombay has been a fertile ground for 9 out of the top 10 dailies over the past one year.

Although TOI has incurred a loss of 2.5 per cent in the current survey, it has added 18.2 per cent readers over the corresponding quarter last year. It had an AIR of 4.80 lakh in the previous quarter against 3.96 lakh in Q2 2010.

Maharashtra Times remains the second largest read daily in this part of Mumbai with an AIR of 3.33 lakh in IRS Q2 2011. The daily had 3.54 lakh readers in the previous quarter and 3.29 lakh readers in Q2 2010.

The largest read Marathi daily has lost 12.1 per cent readers since Q2 2010 when it used to be the second most read daily of New Bombay.

By adding a few readers in the current survey, Hindustan Times has jumped up one position to take the No. 4 slot in Navi Mumbai. HT has an AIR of 2.43 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 against 2.4 lakh in the previous quarter and 2.12 lakh in Q2 2010. It has added 14.6 per cent readers over the past one year.

HT is closely followed by Loksatta in New Bombay with an average issue readership of 2.41 lakh compared with 2.44 lakh in the last survey and 2.01 lakh in Q2 2010. The daily has grown by 20 per cent over the past one year.

At No. 6 is Mumbai Mirror with an AIR of 2.27 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 against 2.08 lakh in the previous quarter and 1.9 lakh in Q2 2010. Mumbai Mirror has also recorded a growth of 19.5 per cent in the last one year.

DNA has an AIR of 2.22 lakh in New Bombay in IRS Q2 2011 against 2.23 lakh in the previous quarter and 1.82 lakh in IRS Q2 2010. DNA has grown by 22 per cent in this part of Mumbai over the past one year.

At No. 9, Navakal has an AIR of 1.82 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 against 1.73 lakh in the previous quarter and 1.8 lakh in Q2 2010.

The last in the list of top 10 for New Bombay is Yeshobhumi with 1.46 lakh readers in the current survey against 1.35 lakh in the previous quarter and 1.02 lakh in IRS Q2 2010. The daily has grown by 43.1 per cent in the area over the past one year.

******************************

Average Issue Readership (AIR) of a publication is defined as the number of readers of that publication who have claimed to have last read it within its periodicity, i.e., last read a daily yesterday, a weekly within the last week, a monthly within the last month, etc.

This measure is considered to be a more relevant measure of ‘real’ or ‘regular’ readership, especially for newspapers, most of which have been read/consumed as a matter of daily habit. Conventionally, media planners calculate and compare cost-benefits of dailies based on the AIR figure. Hence, it is perhaps most relevant to study readership trends in terms of AIR.

The No. 3 and No. 4 positions are held by English dailies in Kolkata. While The Telegraph remains the most read English daily in the city, The Times of India has almost half the readership of The Telegraph.

The current AIR of The Telegraph stands at 9.13 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 against 9.07 lakh in the previous quarter and 8.83 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

TOI has lost a few readers since the previous quarter and also the second quarter of IRS 2010. It has an AIR of 5.35 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 5.52 lakh in the last round of the survey and 5.59 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

Sanmarg is the fifth largest read daily with 4.42 lakh readers against 4.68 lakh in the previous quarter and 4.7 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

The No. 6 daily Aajkaal has been losing its base in the state. The daily lost 9.3 per cent readers in the current round over the previous quarter and 20 per cent readers over the second quarter of last year. Its current AIR stands at 2.94 lakh against 3.27 lakh in the previous quarter and 3.67 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

Sangbad Pratidin has lost a few readers since the last quarter but it has registered an overall growth of 9.6 per cent over the past one year. It has an AIR of 2.74 lakh against 2.9 lakh in the previous quarter and 2.5 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

At No. 8, Ganashakti, has also lost more than 20 per cent readers in the past one year, a reflection of the CPI(M)’s declining fortunes in the state. Its current AIR stands at 2.19 lakh compared with 2.22 lakh in the previous quarter and 2.74 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

The Statesman has 1.37 lakh readers in IRS Q2 2011 against 1.49 lakh in the previous quarter and 1.29 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

Hindi daily Prabhat Khabar is at No.10 position in Kolkata with an average issue readership of 70,000. The newspaper had 66,000 readers in the previous quarter and 77,000 readers in IRS Q2 2010.

The country’s largest financial daily, The Economic Times, is the last in the top 10 list of newspapers of Hyderabad with 20,000 readers.

Mathrubhumi has recorded a loss of 1.03 lakh readers in IRS Q2 2011. At 2nd spot, its current AIR stands at 66.69 lakh against 67.72 lakh in IRS Q1 2011. The daily had 65.45 lakh readers in IRS Q2 2010. After a decline of close to 10 per cent in the last quarter, the paper has again lost 3.4 per cent readers in IRS Q2 2011. Its current AIR now stands at 21.05 lakh compared with 21.8 lakh in the previous quarter and 22.76 lakh in IRS Q2 2010. Thus, the daily has recorded an overall loss of 7.5 per cent over the last one year.

The only paper in Kerala that has seen robust growth during the year is Madhyamam. The No. 4 daily of the state has grown by 8.2 per cent over the previous quarter and 36.9 per cent over IRS Q2 2010. Madhyamam has recorded an AIR of 9.54 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 against 8.82 lakh in the last quarter and 6.97 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

The daily has recorded an AIR of 5.62 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 5 lakh in the previous quarter and 5.16 lakh in IRS Q2 2010. Thus, it has grown 8.9 per cent overall in the last one year.

The declining trend for Kerala Kaumudi has resulted in a loss of 36 per cent readership in the last one year. The paper has an AIR of 5.32 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 against 5.7 lakh in the last quarter and 8.37 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

9 out of top 10 dailies in the state see green; Deccan Chronicle surpasses The Times of India in Tamil Nadu

BestMediaInfo Bureau | Delhi | October 5, 2011

The second quarter results of Indian Readership Survey in 2011 have been outstanding for publications in the state with nine of the top 10 dailies registering growth in IRS Q2 2011. Deccan Chronicle has toppled The Times of India to become the 2nd most read English daily in the state after The Hindu.

The largest read daily of Tamil Nadu, Daily Thanthi, has retained its leadership and added 1.6 per cent readers in IRS Q2 2011. The Tamil daily has registered an AIR of 70.97 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 69.86 lakh in the last quarter and 72.63 lakh in IRS Q2 2010. Thus the paper has recorded a loss in readership of 2.3 per cent over the second quarter of last year.

The No.2 daily of the state, Dinakaran, too has recorded a slight increase in AIR in the current survey. Its AIR now stands at 50.38 lakh against 49.95 lakh in the previous quarter and 49.91 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

The 3rd major player, Dinamalar, has also registered growth of 4.1 per cent in the second quarter of IRS 2011. Its current AIR stands at 26.53 lakh compared with 25.48 lakh in the previous quarter and 28.59 lakh in IRS Q2 2010. Thus, the paper has lost 7.2 per cent readers over Q2 of IRS 2010.

Tamil Nadu, the traditional stronghold for The Hindu, has not been a fertile ground for the daily for five consecutive quarters. With a marginal loss of 0.9 per cent readers, its AIR now stands at 10.55 lakh compared with 10.65 lakh in the previous quarter and 11.31 lakh in IRS Q2 2010. The Hindu has seen an overall decline of 6.7 per cent over the second quarter survey in last year.

The No.5 daily of Tamil Nadu is Dinamani which has recorded an AIR of 5.13 lakh compared with 4.76 lakh in the previous quarter and 5.12 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

Malai Malar has added 6,000 readers in IRS Q2 2011 to take its AIR at 4.17 lakh against 4.11 lakh in the last survey and 5.56 lakh in IRS Q2 2010. It has recorded an overall loss of 25 per cent over the past one year.

Deccan Chronicle has toppled The Times of India to become the 2nd largest read English daily and No.7 newspaper of the state. DC has recorded an AIR of 2.4 lakh compared with 1.96 lakh in the previous quarter and 2.5 lakh in IRS Q2 2010.

The Times of India has also grown by 6.7 per cent in the current survey. The daily has an AIR of 2.22 lakh readers in IRS Q2 2011 against 2.08 lakh in the previous quarter and 2.21 lakh in Q2 2010.

The New Indian Express has recorded an AIR of 1.35 lakh against 1.32 lakh in the previous quarter and 1.08 lakh in Q2 2010.

Tamizh Murasu has an AIR of 1.16 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 1.14 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.
