NDTV files petition in Supreme Court against MIB order

Meanwhile, the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) has condemned the government order and has requested MIB to reconsider its decision

NDTV Ltd has filed a writ petition before the Supreme Court against the order of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting against its Hindi news channel, NDTV India, directing it to stop the transmission or retransmission of the channel for one day from 00:01 hrs of November 9, 2016 till 00:01 hrs of November 10, 2016.

The petition has challenged the constitutional validity of the MIB order and the provisions of law pursuant to which the said order has purportedly been passed.

Meanwhile, on Friday, November 4, the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) issued a statement expressing deep concern over the decision taken by the Inter- Ministerial Committee (IMC) of MIB against NDTV India.

The NBA statement said: “It is surprising to note that NDTV India has been singled out by the IMC/ MoI&B, when the rest of the media also covered the terror attack and all such reports were available in the public domain. The IMC and the MoI&B should have seen it from the prism of freedom of the media, which is guaranteed in the constitution and not gone strictly by the regulations under the Cable Act.”

NBA added that it “would have been appropriate if the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting had referred the alleged violations of NDTV India to the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA), the independent self-regulatory body of NBA”.

In the interest of the freedom of the media, NBA has requested the ministry to reconsider its decision.
