Total permitted private satellite TV channels now in India is 857

As per latest data from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), only 857 private satellite TV channels have valid permission in India. The ministry cancelled the licenses for 126 channels. Earlier, 983 channels had been granted permission.

Of the 857 channels, 399 are news and current affairs channels while the remaining 458 are non-news and current affairs channels.

The total number of TV channels permitted for uplink from India and also to downlink into India is 749 (377 for news, 372 for non-news). Twenty TV channels (7 for news, 13 for non-news) are permitted for uplink from India, but not permitted to downlink in India. Lastly, 88 TV channels (15 for news, 73 for non-news) are permitted to only downlink into India (uplinked from abroad).
