Lajwanti

Zee TV is gearing up to premiere 'Lajwanti', a love story woven around the Partition, on September 28, 2015. The show will air Monday to Friday at 10.30 pm.

'Lajwanti' is a TV adaptation of the short story of the same name by noted writer Rajinder Singh Bedi. It tells the turbulent love story of Lajwanti and Sunderlal. Lajwanti is a bright-eyed, courageous village girl with an indomitable spirit who always stands up for the truth, while Sunderlal is one of the few privileged young men of Badami Baug, Lahore, who is the product of a generation where a man's worth was calculated on the basis of how well he controlled his woman. What happens to this tempestuous relationship in the face of the Partition movement forms the crux of 'Lajwanti'.

Commenting on the new show, Pradeep Hejmadi, Business Head, Zee TV, said, “The partition remains one of Indian history's most challenging times as it saw one of the largest population movements ever recorded and a complete breakdown of law and order. It threw up countless human interest stories – some inspiring, some heart-wrenching, many of which have been chronicled beautifully in books. Television has not explored this epochal event adequately and we saw great merit in presenting one such story, 'Lajwanti'. We have been a consistent leader of the 10.30 pm slot and plan to only up the ante with this show.”

Noted television writer-producer Ila Bedi Datta is all set to present audiences with this adaptation of 'Lajwanti'. Datta said, “It's a great feeling to be able to translate my grandfather Rajinder Singh Bedi's most widely read story, 'Lajwanti', into a television show. It will be telecast on Zee TV, a channel with whom my partnership has produced the immensely successful 'Hitler Didi'. The adaptation of his story is my homage to him in the year of his 100th birth anniversary. He has been hailed as one of the most prominent 20th century progressive writers of Urdu fiction and is most noted for his chronicles of the great Indian Partition movement. 'Lajwanti' lent itself beautifully to creative interpretation as it is a timeless love story that will still resonate strongly with audiences today.”
