Jagran Pehel, a division of Shri Puranchandra Gupta Smarak Trust, and Women Development Corporation (WDC), Government of Bihar, have signed an MoU to implement the fourth phase of the women empowerment project – 'Sapno Ko Chali Chooney'. The project in its fourth phase will be implemented in nine commissionaires in Bihar over a period of 12 months.

'Sapno Ko Chali Chooney' is one of the flagship projects of Jagran Pehel. The programme was born out of an effort to bring gender issues to the forefront and empower college-going girls in Bihar to become confident and be the change agents in the society. The gender sensitisation awareness campaign has been assigned to Jagran Pehel under the DFID-supported Swasth programme.

Initially, the project was initiated by Jagran Pehel in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in the year 2009. It has been an important programme of the Women Development Corporation of Bihar since 2011 and is now being implemented under the Mukhyamantri Nari Swashaktikaran Yojna.

The initiative has already completed three phases. In the fourth phase, the project will be implemented in 18 colleges across the nine commissionaires, with special focus on girls' colleges. In the last few years, the project has been able to reach out to more than 127,000 girls in 54 colleges across 20 administrative districts of Bihar. The project has been able to create 120 young leaders who have been mentored and capacities built to become 'change agents' in the society.

Anand-MadhabThe MoU was signed by Dr N Vijayalaxmi, Managing Director, Women Development Corporation of Bihar, and Anand Madhab, CEO, Jagran Pehel.

Dr Vijayalaxmi expressed her satisfaction over the successful collaboration between Jagran Pehel and Women Development Corporation of Bihar since 2011 and added that she was looking forward to further strengthening the ties with Jagran Pehel by signing the MoU for the third consecutive time for implementing the fourth phase of the 'Sapno Ko Chali Chooney' initiative.

Madhab added here, “This project is very close to my heart. The MoU will further empower the girls to become change leaders and bring gender equality in the society. UNFPA's India office is an integral part of this programme and we hope that the relationship will continue this year as well.”
