When it comes to recruitment, progressive minds believe that interviews should be social interactions and not interrogations. Following this line of thought, Seagull Advertising, a 17-year-old, Pune-based advertising and brand consultancy firm, recently conducted interviews in an innovative way: by throwing a recruitment party, where interviews were conducted over drinks and music at Kiva Ivy, a popular pub-lounge in Pune.

Elaborating on the reasons behind this innovative recruitment drive called 'Cheers to Ideas', Sameer Desai, MD, Seagull Advertising, said, “We've become very conditioned nowadays to do things in a certain way, even in a creative environment like advertising. So, we decided to think out of the box, literally get out of the box, even for a standard procedure like recruitment. We also realised that in an informal atmosphere, a person is more comfortable, more relaxed and so performs better in interviews. Even better, the candidates cannot really lie after a drink and so show their real portfolios!"

'Cheers to Ideas' took place last Saturday, with more than 350 people submitting their resumes for nine different positions. From the 350 resumes received, 25 candidates were shortlisted and invited to the event. The idea of interviews over drinks and music went down well even with the candidates. Said one of them who didn't want to be named, 'This was unlike any other interview I've been to. It made me feel more comfortable than being interviewed in a formal office set-up.”

Another candidate commented, “The blinking light bulb recruitment ad on Facebook caught my attention. When I read more about the interview, I was struck by the novel idea and wanted to participate.”

The recruitment party helped Seagull Advertising shortlist eight final candidates. In the future, Cheers to Ideas will offer a platform where people from all spheres of life like painters, artists, musicians, innovators, advertisers, marketers, can come together and celebrate ideas over music and drinks. As Desai put it, “We're not alcoholic, we're ideaholics. So anybody with an idea is welcome to participate. We'll definitely be raising our glasses to that!”
