publive-imageOne of the most trusted international magazines, National Geographic, completes its 125th year this October. ACK Media, the distributor of National Geographic in India, is celebrating the launch of National Geographic magazine's 125th anniversary issue with a wide range of events. The collector's issue is devoted to photography and its long history at National Geographic.

The National Geographic Society, founded in Washington in 1888, is one of the world's largest non-profit scientific and educational institutions, reaching nearly a half a billion people each month. In India the magazine has 40,000 subscriptions and another 25,000 copies sell through retail commands at large base. This has been achieved by a mix of mainline advertising, press relations, online (with two websites www.nationalgeographic.co.in and www.getnationalgeographic.com - the specialist subscription website), social media and tactical out-of-home activations.

The collector's issue, which will have photography as its main theme is being promoted by the society already.

Manas Mohan, COO, ACK Media & Publishing Director of National Geographic Magazine in India, said, "We have already started promotions on B2B print and online channels. In celebration of the iconic yellow border's 125th anniversary, we are set to sponsor the first NG photo workshop in Delhi for amateurs and professionals with the guidance of a few National Geographic photographers including Ashima Narain to shed light on several aspects of the art and science of picture taking.”

Mohan added, “Retail activation will receive most of the marketing budget. We have displays across some of the premier retail stores around the country and with IBH; we will activate several of our important newsstand partners."

The company also plans to invest in marketing programmes including contests on radio, panel discussions, and in-magazine and online contests for brand recall. Also, NGM plans to reach out to schools and other educational institutions. Another aspect they are looking at, at the moment, is to take the magazine to the digital platform.

"Probably the most critical business solution would be to work with some likeminded brands and create customer engagement platforms that will cut through the clutter of above the line advertising and generate loyal customers for all participating brands,” Mohan said.

“National Geographic continuously redefines the standard of excellence with superior editorial product, world-renowned photography, brand recognition, and consumer trust and we will continue to partner with cutting edge expeditions and initiatives in the travel, tourism and adventure spaces to bring to the country stories that few other media brands will be able to conceive of and to support the society's mission of inspiring people to care about the planet," added Mohan.
