Hindustan Times has invited young minds of Mumbai to become a part of its first-ever Student Editorial board. The HT Student Editorial Board marks a fresh initiative by the city's second-largest newspaper to involve some of its youngest readers in the making of the paper and to bring in their perspective on news selection and coverage.

Students from Class 7 to 10 could be a part of the HT Student Editorial Board. Interested students had to write a 300-word essay on “Why I should be chosen for the HT Student Editorial Board”. Of the nearly 200 applicants, HT's panel of senior editors selected 15 students and formed 3 editorial boards of 5 students each. Members of each Student Editorial Board interacted with senior editors in our newsroom, discussed elements of journalism, shaping news coverage, selected content and approach for the page they were allotted.

The first of these pages was carried in the HT edition of June 4, 2013 as Page 6. Among the interesting elements is the wishlist that HT's Student Editors developed for what they would like to see done in Mumbai to make it a better city to live in. The second and the third are scheduled to appear this week and the next. HT's senior editors guided this unique process of student journalism at every step.

Speaking on the initiative, Smruti Koppikar, Editor (Special Assignments), said, “HT has been involved with a number of recognised initiatives in the education sector; our HT Scholarship and Top Schools Survey rank among the most eagerly awaited events in the city's academic calendar. The HT Student Editorial Board is yet another step in that direction, one that we believe will strengthen the news habit of teenagers.”
