Recognising the agents of change who will stop at nothing to fight for their rights and of those around them, IBN Network, in partnership with Idea Cellular, announced the winners of the prestigious Citizen Journalist Awards. At a glittering awards ceremony held at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi, Chief Guest Anna Hazare felicitated 17 Citizen Journalists for their brave and inspirational endeavours. Actress Gul Panag, Kabir Bedi, Sudhir Mishra and Nawazuddin Siddiqui also joined to grace the occasion.

The Citizen Journalist Awards, now in their fifth year, were given under five categories: Fight for Her Rights, Citizens against Corruption, What an Idea, CJ Video & CJ Photo.

The Citizen Journalist Awards adhered to a stringent selection process where the IBN Network Editorial Board shortlisted the nominees in the first phase basis their stories featured on the IBN channels and/or on the CJ microsite http://citizenjournalistawards.com/. The IBN Network then deliberated on the nominees to reach a majority decision on the winners.

 

The 17 awardees were:

 

  • A Dalit girl who fought against her molesters
  • Two sisters who fought back against their rapist father
  • CJ Jasmeen Patheja who campaigns against sexual harassment
  • CJ Rachna Singhal who took on a coaching institute for misusing her photograph
  • A father struggling for justice for his daughter who was impregnated at the age of 13
  • CJ Fayaz Ahmed Wani who exposed corruption in a government housing scheme
  • CJ Tinu Thomas who caught policemen breaking traffic rules on camera
  • CJ Aiswarya RM who raised her voice against Kerala's 'hartal' culture
  • CJ Ajay Sharma who uncovered corruption in Hathras' Irrigation Department
  • CJ Shanti Prakash who fought for the farmers whose lands were taken away illegally
  • CJ Saloni Gupta who brought the dangers of an unfenced transformer to the notice of authorities
  • CJ Naveen Khanna who is tirelessly fighting to impose a countrywide ban on the sale of gutkha
  • CJ Ashish Ashok Limaye who runs a blog to help police catch errant truck drivers
  • CJ Team 'Ab Main Ek Bajaoon' who run a campaign to combat street sexual harassment
  • CJ Charanjeet Dhiman who captured the injustice of various authorities on camera
  • CJ Swati Srivastava who exposed the shocking condition of a government autopsy centre
  • CJ Meera Vijayann whose mission is to urge citizens to speak out against sexual harrassment

 

Speaking about the initiative Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-Chief, CNN-IBN, IBN7 & IBN-Lokmat, said, “Those citizens who have zealously taken the responsibility to fight for a better life for their countrymen deserve to be acknowledged and awarded. The Citizen Journalist Awards are indeed a salute to these masses from across the nation.”

Ashutosh, Managing Editor, IBN7, said, “We are proud to have been able to recognize the brave citizens who have raised their voices against injustice and deceit in the society.”

Enumerating about the award, Nikhil Wagle, Editor, IBN-Lokmat, said “With each edition of the Citizen Journalist Awards, our fight against injustice only grows stronger along with the fight of the common man.”
