IRS Q1 2011: Top 10 dailies in West Bengal

The only state with no growth in readership of all the top 10 dailies.

publive-imageThe first quarter of IRS 2011 has been worse than the last quarter for the publications in West Bengal. All the top 10 dailies in the state except Sanmarg have registered decline.

No.1 Bangla daily 'Anand Bazar Patrika' has registered loss in the third consecutive quarter. The largest read Bangla daily has recorded an AIR of 60.48 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 61.06 lakh in the previous quarter and 64.48 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. Thus the daily has lost 6.2% readership over the past one year.

Bangla Daily 'Bartaman' has registered a dip of 3% in its AIR this quarter. The No.2 daily in the state has recorded an AIR of at 29.26 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 30.16 lakh in last survey and 26.49 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

At No.3, 'The Telegraph' has registered an AIR of 10.35 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 10.61 lakh in the previous quarter and 9.85 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

publive-image'Sangbad Pratidin' has also seen a marginal decline in the first quarter of IRS 2011. Its AIR now stands at 10.04 lakh as compared to 10.06 lakh in the previous quarter and 10.41 in IRS Q1 2010.

'Ganashakti' remains the fifth largest read daily in the state with an AIR of 7.61 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 7.79 lakh in the last survey and 10.05 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

At No.6 is 'Aajkal'. The paper has also lost readers and now has AIR of 6.51 lakh. It had recorded AIR of 6.68 lakh the previous quarter and 7.72 in the first quarter of 2010.

'The Times of India' has lost some readers in West Bengal. The English daily is at 7th spot with AIR of 6.30 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 6.6 lakh in previous quarter and 6.38 in IRS Q1 2010.

'Uttar Banga Sambad' has also registered a decline of 7.2%. Its current AIR stands at 5.12 lakh as compared to 5.52 lakh in the previous quarter and 4.97 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

'Sanmarg' is the only newspaper in the state which has manage to hold its readers in the current survey. Its AIR stands at 5.02 lakh as compared to 5.01 lakh in the previous quarter and 4.55 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

'Sambad' holds the 10th spot in the state with 2.21 lakh readers as per the average issue readership data release for the first quarter of IRS 2011. The daily has registered 14% of decline.
