IRS Q1 2011: Top 10 dailies in Kerala

Only top 2 dailies register marginal growth; The New Indian Express replaces Deepika despite a marginal loss.

publive-imageThe first quarter of IRS 2011 has brought no relief for the publications in Kerala as only top 2 dailies in the state have registered marginal growth. There has been no major change in the pecking order except The New Indian Express which has replaced Deepika despite losing a few readers in the current survey.

Kerala's No.1 daily 'Malayala Manorama' has maintained its leadership and registered a marginal growth in the first quarter of IRS 2011. Its current AIR stands at 98.37 lakh as compared to 98.01 lakh in the previous quarter and 94.75 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. The daily had added 3.82% more readers over the first quarter of IRS 2010.

'Mathrubhumi' holds the 2nd spot firmly by adding maximum readers in the current survey. It has recorded and AIR of 67.72 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 66.11 lakh in the last quarter and 66.70 in IRS Q1 2010. Overall, Mathrubhumi has seen a marginal growth of 1.53% in its average issue readership over the year.

The 3rd major player in Kerala, 'Deshabhimani' has seen a huge decline in the current survey after a consistent growth in the last 3 quarters. The daily has an AIR of 21.8 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 23.68 lakh in the publive-imageprevious quarter and 21.74 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. Thus the paper has added just 6,000 readers over the same quarter in 2010.

At No.4, 'Madhyamam' has recorded an AIR of 8.82 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 9.04 lakh in the last quarter and 7.64 lakh in IRS Q1 2010; however, it has registered a substantial growth of 15.4% over the Q1 2010.

'Kerala Kaumudi' has again lost a large number of readers in the current survey. The paper has an AIR of 5.70 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 6.29 lakh in the last quarter and 8.72 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. The overall decline for the newspaper has been around 35% over the past one year.

At No.6, 'Mangalam' has also seen decline and registered an AIR of 5.00 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 against 5.46 lakh in previous quarter and 5.89 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

The decline story for the No.7 daily in Kerala 'The Hindu' continues this quarter also. Its AIR stands at 3.24 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 3.33 lakh in the previous quarter and 3.76 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

Pushing back one position to 'Deepika' at No.9, 'The New Indian Express' has acquired 8th spot in the state despite losing a few readers in the current survey. The average issue readership of The News Indian Express stands at 2.15 lakh readers in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 2.2 lakh in the previous quarter and 2.27 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.

At No.9 now, 'Deepika' has lost 14.5% readers and recorded an AIR of 1.89 lakh as compared to 2.2 lakh in the previous quarter and 1.76 lakh in the first quarter of IRS 2010.

'Kerala Kumudi Flash' is the last in the top 10 list of dailies in Kerala with 1.7 lakh readers as compared to 2.01 lakh readers in the previous survey and 2.19 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.
