IRS Q1 2011: Top 10 dailies in Karnataka

7 out of the top 10 dailies in Karnataka register growth; close fight for No.1 position.

publive-imageLike the previous quarter, growth story is continuing in the first quarter of IRS 2010 for the dailies in Karnataka where 7 out of the top 10 publications have maintained robust growth. While Vijay Karnataka has been able to hold its readers, the second largest read daily Prajavani has reduced the gap with Vijaya Karnataka.

Holding its readership in the first quarter of IRS 2011, the No.1 Kannada daily 'Vijay Karnataka' has maintained its leadership. It has recorded and AIR of 34.70 lakh as compared to 34.75 lakh in the previous quarter and 33.22 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. Overall, Vijay Karnataka has grown by 4.5% during 2010.

The second largest read daily in the state 'Prajavani' has grown by 7% in IRS Q1 2011 and added 2.23 lakh readers over the last quarter. Its AIR now stands at 34.03 lakh as compared to 31.8 lakh in the previous quarter and 22.41 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. Prajavani has grown by 52% and added a total of 11.62 lakh over the year 2010.

At No.3, 'Kannada Prabha' has again shown a robust growth of 7.8%. The average issue readership (AIR) of Kannada Prabha has been recorded at publive-image13.34 lakh as compared to 12.37 lakh in the previous survey and 7.49 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. Thus the paper has registered an oveall growth of 78% over the first quarter of IRS 2010.

There is again a close fight for No.3 position in Karnataka as the No.4 daily 'Samyukta Karnataka' has shown growth of 9.6% in the first quarter of IRS 2011. Its current AIR stands at 13.06 lakh as compared to 11.92 lakh in the last quarter and 8.12 lakh in IRS Q1 2011. The newspaper has grown by 61% over the year.

'Udayavani' is the first daily so far which has lost 4% readers in IRS Q1 2011. At No.5, Udayavani has recorded an AIR of 8.93 lakh as compared to 9.31 lakh in the previous survey and 8.20 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. Thus the daily has registered an overall growth of 9% over the past one year.

'The Times of India' has again shown growth and recorded an AIR of 5.35 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 4.99 lakh in the previous quarter and 4.47 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. TOI has added 20%  new readers during last year.

At No.7, 'Deccan Herald' has strengthened its position by gaining 10.7% readers in the current survey findings. It has recorded an AIR of 4.23 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 3.82 lakh in the last quarter and 3.07 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. The daily has added 38% readers over the same quarter of last year.

'Sanjavani' is back on its No.8 position which it had lost to Tarun Bharat in the last quarter. The daily has an AIR of 2.07 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 1.71 lakh in previous quarter and 1.85 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. Thus the paper has added 22,000 readers during last year.

At No.9, there is a new entrant 'Bangalore Mirror' with 1.60 lakh of AIR which had 1.34 lakh readers in the previous quarter.

'Tarun Bharat' has slipped to No.10 position after losing more than 20% readers in this quarter. The paper has recorded an AIR of 1.60 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 2 lakh in the previous quarter.
